0162 UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (Dubai) - The Jumeirah Mosque

Jumeirah Mosque is located in coastal residential area with the same name (which literally means burning embers) in Dubai. The area, populated with western expatriates and familiar to the tourists, comprises mainly low rise private dwellings (both expensive properties as well as more modest town houses built in a variety of architectural styles). The beachfront area was previously called Chicago Beach, as the site of the former Chicago Beach Hotel, but the name not persisted too long after the old Hotel was demolished in 1997. Jumeirah Beach has now a number of luxury hotels on its beach front, the most prominent being the world famous Burj Al Arab.

Built in the medieval Fatimid tradition in 1978, this stone structure is a tribute to modern Islamic architecture. Considered to be one of the most attractive mosques in Dubai, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding organizes visits to the Jumeirah Mosque for non-Muslims (every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10:00h), aimed at promoting cultural understanding and first-hand experience as an insight to the Islamic religion. The mosque is a beautiful white stone structure with towering twin minarets framing a large central dome. Its seashell-like finish and colouring fit perfectly with the mosque’s position opposite the white sands of Jumeirah Beach.
