2658 DENMARK (Faroe Islands) - The Toftir Lighthouse

Eysturoy (Danish: Østerø) meaning "East Island" is the second-largest of the Faroe Islands, both in size and population, separated by a narrow sound from the main island of Streymoy. It is extremely rugged, with some 66 separate mountain peaks, including Slættaratindur, the highest peak in the archipelago. Toftir is a fishing port, part of a chain of villages stretching over a distance of 10km on the east side of Skálafjørður (fjord), near the southern end of the island.

Built in 1893 on a promontory south of the entrance to Toftir harbor, about 5km north of Tórshavn, the Toftir Lighthouse is a 7m round cylindrical cast iron tower, with lantern and gallery, painted white with one red horizontal band. The lantern is located 12.7m above sea level. It is active, and his light is white, red or green, depending on direction, occulting once every 5s. The white light can be seen 12 nautical miles away , while the red and green lights are visible at 9 mile distance.
