0442 ROMANIA (Suceava) - Pietrele Doamnei in Rarău Mountains

Located in the Oriental Carpathians, Rarău Mountains are among the most picturesque in the region. The main attraction of these mountains is the impressive ensemble of cliffs Pietrele Doamnei (Lady's Rocks – in image), which provides a ruiniform relief consisting of a series of Mesozoic limestone towers, encrusted with corals and ammonites, with heights betwen 10m and 70m, surrounded by a mass of scree with variable sizes. They are derived from the fragmentation (freeze - thaw) of a limestone peak.

Legend says that in 1541 Petru Rareş, one of the illegitimate sons of Ştefan cel Mare, defeated and driven from the throne, stopped on the way to the city of Ciceu, with lady Elena and his son Ştefăniţă, on the foot of Rarău, which was then called Mount Todirescu. Prince left further to gather a army, and Elena and Ştefăniţă remained to guard some of their wealth. After a few days appeared the Turkish enemies and the two decided to hide in a cave the royal treasures. When the Turks tried to enter in cave, huge rocks fell on them, also sealing the cave, and Lady Elena would have said "this is the payment for our salvation". Since then the rocks are called Pietrele Doamnei, and the Mount Todirescu was named Rarău, after the name of Petru Rareş.
