1721 FRANCE (New Caledonia) - Fusiliers in the waters of Ouvéa Island

Ouvéa, one of the Loyalty Islands, has rich marine resources and is home to many sea turtles, species of fish, and coral. A common fish is the blue fusilier (Caesio caerulaurea), which is found in coastal areas on coral reefs throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific area. It is a cylindrical, streamlined fish, of up to 60 cm. Its upper jaws are extensible, and adapted for picking plankton.
