2854 FINLAND (Pirkanmaa) - Tampere Cathedral

Designed in the National Romantic style by Lars Sonck, Tampere Cathedral was built between 1902 and 1907. In the beginning of the 20th century Russification was a governmental policy of the Russian Empire aimed at limiting the special status of the Grand Duchy of Finland and possibly the termination of its autonomy. This caused the rise of the national romanticism in Finland and Tampere Cathedral was one of the most remarkable examples of the new national spirit.

It is famous for its frescoes, painted by the symbolist Hugo Simberg between 1905 and 1906. The paintings aroused considerable adverse criticism in their time, featuring versions of Simberg's The Wounded Angel and The Garden of Death. The large altarpiece, representing the future resurrection of people of all races, was painted by Magnus Enckell. The each of the six entrances to the building has its own gate in the surrounding stone wall. The church became a Cathedral in 1923, and is a popular place for weddings and conserts.

About the stamps
About the cross-shaped self-adhesives stamp I wrote here. The second stamp is part of the series Animals are faithful friends!, designed by Anne Vasko, and issued on January 9, 2016 to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. The five stamps depict stylized wild and domestic animals.
