3055 ROMANIA (Bucharest) - Postcrossing Meetup, Bucharest, 14 May 2017

For the postcard realised on the occasion of the 28th meetup of the Romanian postcrossers, that took place in Bucharest on May 14, Mihnea Răducu (who usually deals with this) chose a peony, maybe because it blooms in this month, but mainly because Romfilatelia has recently issued the series Flowers, National Symbols, and one of the stamps depicts even the peony, Romania's national symbol flower. Peony (Paeonia peregrina) is a species of flowering plant in the peony family Paeoniaceae, native to Southeastern Europe and Turkey.

Romanian Peony (Paeonia peregrina Mill. var. romanica) is present in the forests of the plain or at the edge thereof, in Dobruja, Greater Wallachia and southern Moldavia. It is an erect, herbaceous perennial with 9-lobed, deeply divided leaves. Single, glossy red flowers, 10-13cm in diameter, with prominent yellow stamens, are borne in May. It is also known as the Palm of the Lord's Mother (verbatim). In popular culture, the peony is often associated with longing, with physical beauty or love.

About the stamp
The stamp is part of the series Flowers, National Symbol, designed by Răzvan Popescu and issued on March 17, 2017. Together with the symbol flower of each state, the national flag completes the stamp illustration.
